(also...)

i heard talk recently ("talk" being msn.com, i believe) that the us might give the penny the ax due to the production costs rising and the value of the penny decreasing, what have you. and you know what? i'm all for it. get rid of the penny, i say. it's always winds up being that annoying copper coin you find at the bottom or your bag that you can't use in a vending machine anyway.

maybe this is my stint in europe talking. when i first moved, i remarked to a friend that i couldn't believe the smallest coin switzerland had was the five centime. and she remarked back that she was so surprised america bothered to deal with the penny. it makes things so complicated! and you know what? it's true. in switzerland, everything was priced ending in .oo or .o5 it began to make sense.

so, i say get rid of the penny. and while your doing that, trade the dollar bill for a coin. they're doing so much with the new quarters, nickles, ten and twenty dollar bills, it shouldn't be too hard of a transition. there are all sorts of marketing directions it could go in to make it easier. like, have america vote for who should be on the new coin. an artist. an activist. someone besides a politician.

i think it's time.
